What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a method of activating the healing powers of the body. It is an effective form of foot massage based on the principal that reflex points on the hands and feet correspond to each organ and structure in the body and are linked to those organs by energy channels, zones or meridians. Illness or imbalance can cause corresponding channels to become blocked. Reflexology aims to revitalise and stimulate the bodies energy flow by removing these blocks and allowing energy to flow freely again, thus creating a state of harmony and balance throughout the body.

Reflexology can improve health in several ways. Stress is a major factor in everyday modern life. Reflexology aims to induce a deep state of relaxation within the individual receiving the massage. This allows positive healing energy to flow freely throughout the body and promotes a rebalancing effect. With over 75% of illness being stress related, this is an extremely positive effect of reflexology. Circulation can be badly effected by stress with the tightening of the cardiovascular system, restricting blood flow and causing circulation to become sluggish. Reflexology can help improve the flow of blood through the cardiovascular system again by reducing stress and tension levels.

Neural pathways carry messages across the whole body. However these pathways can easily become blocked and impaired by numerous factors, causing the body’s processes to operate much slower as nerve function is impeded. More than 7,000 nerves are contacted during a reflexology massage and this encourages the opening and clearing of these neural pathways, meaning they operate much more effectively.

Ultimately the main aim of reflexology is to help create a state of balance within in the body where the many parts and systems are working together harmoniously and are in balance. This should improve a person’s general energy levels and help promote homeostasis within the body.
